Klamath Tribes respond to proposal questions regarding
actions spurred by Senator John McCain's legislation.
Chiloquin, OR - Due to several media inquiries and a news article published by Columbian staff writer, Jeffrey Mize, the Klamath Tribes of Oregon have chosen to comment regarding their submission of an application (Due by April 15, 2006) which was forced by Senator John McCain's legislation that could shut the door on off-reservation gambling.
Rod Clarke, President of the Klamath Tribes Economic Development Corporation stated - "First and foremost we want people to know that it is the duty and responsibility of the Tribes Economic Development Corporation to seek enterprise for the Tribes and this can only be done with the consent of the tribes general membership. Later this month we are having a meeting to update our membership on this legislation and the application process, but since the media has taken a special interest in Senator John McCain's Bill, we must now put forth a public statement to dispel some of the rumors that have surfaced.
The Klamath's (along with several other tribes) felt it was necessary to submit an application, due to the fact the cut-off date of April 15th was upon us. The Klamath Tribes simply submitted the application to ensure and preserve the "option" if we so choose in the future. It is the Klamath Tribes Economic Development Corporation's responsibility to our membership, and a right given to us by our Restoration Act, to keep business opportunities available to the tribe, wherever they may be.
In the event these discussions finalize into a "formal" gaming or economic development proposal, you can be assured the Corporation and the Tribe will release a notice for the press and our membership at the appropriate time.
But at this point, we cannot comment on items that are simply speculation."
